Just downloaded the 8.5FP1 server and client.  Server installed, no problems; seems to be OK.

The client was a different matter.  First the install wouldn't run - got an error that I forgot to make a note of..  So I restarted my machine (Windows XP SP3), and then the install ran fine, but then the fun and games really started.

When I tried to start the client, the start showed the splash screen, then error: ndgts.dll can't be found (I don't have the exact wording).  It's not there in the client, but it was in the server.  So thought about copying it from server to client.  Then I decided to check about a bit more first:
- Notes.INI for client and server; anything untoward?
- Windows start icon properties - anything strange here?.   I also tried starting notes.exe and nlnotes.exe from \lotus\notes, but that didn't work either
- checked registry entries in hkey_local-machine/software/lotus/notes/8.0 for paths, datapaths and so on. Noted that the version was 080500.

All looked good, so I copied ndgts.dll from client to server.   Then the same error with nlsccstr.dll.  So I copied that from server to client also.

But this didn't look at all right.   I Googled ndgts.dll, and found this: http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/nd8forum.nsf/0/3c7f8745b97fc121852575220040f7dd?OpenDocument, which is a similar sounding issue from Notes 8.0.2.

But after copying those two files, the client now starts OK.

But Full-text indexing is borked.  All my FTI'd databases now say that they aren't index, but index files exist.   If I try to delete the index, I get an error.   The fisr time, the message said: c:\documents and settings\N0001\application data\mozilla\registry.dat does not exist.  What?

I tried to create a new FT index, and got this error in the Notes status bar, and in my Notes log:

27/07/2009 11:58:01   Error full text indexing help\help85_designer.nsf: File does not exist

Which isn't true....

Trying to delete what appears to be a part-formed index then gives another error:
Image:8.5 FP1 Client. Full Text indexing is Broken
Which is true, that file doesn't exist, but then why would it be relevant?

1) Hmmm...it worked for me

I installed 8.5 FP1 with no issues. After reading your posting I created a replica and full text indexed it with no issues. The two files you noted were missing are on my local installation. Have you tried FP1 on another workstation?

2) I rather expect it would work for most people

Jim: thanks. I expect it would work for most people, otherwise there would have been a flood of posts over the weekend. But I've since had FT issues with server DBs, and Matt White has had trouble with FP1 on a server too. So I have to start thinking that FP1 is a little, well, delicate, maybe.

3) 8.5 FP1 Client. Full Text indexing is Broken

I am having this same issue on a client machine. I have reinstalled and everytime I try using the client machine with the server I get the exact same error message "File 'C:\Documents and Settings\%username%|Application Data\Mozilla\registry.dat' does not exist"

Which is true, it doesn't. The client then sits there forever trying to connect to the server and in essence locks to this one task. Help.

4) 8.5 FP1 Client. Full Text indexing is Broken

I'm not sure what to say here, because the problem doesn't exist on my Notes client, now. I now have 8.5.1FP2 installed.

All I can suggest is

- delete the index via the Db properties, close the Notes client, and remove the FT index files directory from disk

- restart Notes

- re-create the index.

If that doesn't work

- try 8.5.1FP2

- raise a PMR with IBM, if you have a support contract.
